Charida

Charida Village, nestled at the foothills of the Ayodhya Hills, just 5 km from Baghmundi, Purulia, is a haven for art lovers. Renowned for its rich artistic heritage, the village is home to more than 250 artisans who meticulously craft the masks used in their traditional martial arts dance form, Chhau. A trip to the Charidah village promises a glimpse not only into the vibrant world of Chauu but also into the craftmanship and the hardwork that goes into creating these masks from scratch.

Turga Falls and Dam

The Turga Falls is situated in the small idyllic village of Turga surrounded by hills and forests in Baghmundi, a mere 10 mins drive from the magnificent Turga Dam. Cascading down a 200-foot drop amidst towering and jagged rocks, the waterfall is a breath-taking sight to behold. The water is so pristine that drizzles from the Fall glistens in the sun resembling tiny crystals.

Khairabera Lake

Located just 22 km from Sonkupi village, the Khairabera Lake is a natural wonder nestled amidst the slopes of the Ayodhya hills and the Baghmundi forests. Each season brings a unique transformation to the lake. However, it’s during Spring when its beauty reaches its peak as the vibrant red flowers of the Palash trees surrounding the lake are in full bloom, casting their reflection on the water, thus, enhancing the beauty of the area.

Bamni Falls

Bamni Falls, located within a 15 kms radius of Sonkupi, Baghmundi is a perennial waterfall surrounded by hills and vibrant greenery. Reaching its base involves descending approximately 500 steps along a picturesque and lightly forested trail. As the waterfall cascades over the rocks, it creates a small lake below, perfect for unwinding amidst nature’s tranquillity.

Murguma Dam

Murguma, locally known as the “Home of the Peacocks”, is home to one of the prettiest Dams in Purulia. Situated approximately 33 kms from Sonkupi, Baghmundi, this reservoir nestled along the tributary of Kangsabati river is renowned as a popular picnic destination. Its tranquil waters, framed by the lush green surroundings, is perfect for making memories with loved ones as well as immersing in the serene ambiance of nature’s beauty.

PakhiPahar

Situated just 8 km from Sonkupi, PakhiPahar, or The Bird’s Hill, is ideal not just for rock climbing but stands out as a popular birdwatching destination as well. About 800 ft high, this natural wonder also doubles as an artistic showcase of the renowned artist, ChittaDey, who along with his team, has meticulously sculpted nearly 65 images of birds on the rugged in-situ rock surface to promote conservation of the rich birdlife in the area.

The Upper and Lower Dams

The Upper and Lower dams are integral parts of the PPSP (Purulia Pumped Storage Project). The crystal-clear water of the Lower dam cradled amidst the hills, paints a picturesque sight. A roadside viewpoint overlooking this dam unveils a breathtaking panoramic view of the lake and lofty hills that surround it. As for the Upper Dam, stretching for over 1 km, its a perfect blend between an engineering marvel and nature’s splendour.

Marble Lake

The Marble Lake, situated near Ayodha Hill top approximately 16 kms from Sonkupi, Baghmundi, has formed naturally overtime due to accumulation of rain water in the abandoned marble quarries, thereby creating this beautiful expanse of water framed by imposing cliffs of rugged boulders. Stretching over a length of about 1.5 km, the Marble Lake is the perfect place for enjoying leisurely walks along the shore.

Deulghata

Situated across the Kasai River and 42 kms from Sonkupi Village in Baghmundi, Deulghata stands as a testimony to Purulia’s rich past dating back to the 10th or 12th century A.D. Only 3 stone Temples or Deuls have survived to this day, with the tallest temple being 60 ft high. The stucco decorations on the temples depict miniature Rekha motifs, scroll works and other artworks consistent with that of the Pal and Sen Dynasties from medieval Bengal.

MayurPahar

MayurPahar, standing at an elevation of 1985 ft above sea level, is rumoured to once have been inhabited by wild peacocks or Mayurs. Located just 21 km from Sonkupi, Baghmundi, this hillock is an ideal destination for trekking enthusiasts. To reach the summit, one must traverse a rocky path flanked with beautiful tall evergreen trees and massive boulders, followed by a steep ravine. The journey to the top is immensely rewarding as it offers a panoramic view of the distant hills.

JoychandiPahar

JoychandiPahar, a whitish maroon monolithic hill with an elevation of about 509 ft above sea level, is a popular tourist destination surrounded by several smaller hillocks and sparse vegetation. Overtime, it has not only gained popularity as a trekking spot but also served as a filming location for the nostalgic Bengali film “HirokRajarDeshe” by Satyajit Ray. Trekking enthusiasts to JoychandiPahar can enjoy a scenic climb up its moderately steep slopes, which involve ascending about 520 steps to reach the top.

Baranti

Baranti is a quaint and scenic village, renowned for its picturesque Baranti Lake, which extends to about 1.5 km in length and the beautiful natural landscapes that surrounds it. In winter, the lake side transforms into a popular picnic destination, attracting people from nearby areas for leisurely day-long outings amidst its peaceful surroundings. Visitors also flock to this lake to enjoy the sunsets casting their mesmerizing golden hues over the serene waters, adding to the charm of this idyllic destination.

Ayodhya Hills

The Ayodhya hill in Purulia, standing at around 2297 ft above sea level, is cherished by both novice rock climbers and tourists for its scenic beauty and basic rock-climbing opportunities. Its popularity peaks particularly during the Durga Puja when the weather is cool and pleasant, and the hill is adorned with KashPhoolresembling a blanket of snow. Similarly, during spring, the blooming Palash flowers drapes the entire area in fiery red, attracting visitors from all over the State.

GarhPanchkot

Nestled in the Panchkot hills, GarhPanchkot served as the proud capital of the Panchkot Raj from 940 A.D. to 1750 A.D., until the disruptive Bargi attacks. Its name pays homage to the formidable Guard’s Quarters, an expansive stone structure spanning 5382 square feet and about 1969 ft from sea level. Accessing the fort entails a picturesque 7 km trek from the Singha-Dwar, with the path covered in thick vegetation, making it traversable primarily during winter. Despite its weathered appearance, GarhPanchkot remains a beacon of historical allure, drawing visitors to explore its ancient ruins and revel in its timeless natural beauty.

Gorga Buru

Gorga Buru situated 17 km from Sonkupi, Baghmundi, is the second highest peak in the Ayodhya hill range with an elevation of roughly 2805 ft above sea level. Renowned for its rich biodiversity and dense evergreen forests featuring Palash trees, this hill attracts seasoned hikers, rock climbers, nature enthusiasts, as well as photographers.

GajaBuru

GajaBuru, situated 29 kms from Sonkupi, Baghmundi, is one of the most prominent hills of the Ayodhya Hill range, rising approximately 1939 ft above sea level. Its rugged and steep slopes make it an ideal destination for experienced rock climbers. Additionally, tourists are drawn to its scenic beauty and thrilling ambiance, making it a perfect spot for camping and outdoor exploration.
